Callers Swamp Show with Spring Break Regrets!

Sue, Dr. Robin, Dr. Drew

On April 1, our single-topic episode - Spring Break Regrets! - practically knocked the call-screeners out of their seats!

It would appear that former party-animals have plenty of regrets - such as cheating on boyfriends during Spring Break, or getting drunk and having group sex - and they were anxious to tell us about it.

Sue was joined by two fabulous guests (pictured above) - Dr. Robin Milhausen, Asst. Prof. of Sexuality at Guelph University, and highly-successful pyschiatrist, Dr. Drew, host of "Loveline".

All three hit it off famously, and - if you missed the show - watch for it in upcoming repeats!

March/April 2006

Late Night (and Later!) with Conan O'Brien

Sue at NBC At the end of March, Sue found herself back in New York City for her second appearance on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien".

It was a glorious time of year to visit The Big Apple. The weather was sunny and mild, and the city's neighborhood trees were already beginning to bloom. Spring was starting to stir in Toronto as well, but New York was several weeks ahead and a delight to behold. (Pictured right - Sue gawks outside the legendary studios)

Sue, executive producer Julie Smith, and co-producer R.J. Gulliver were delivered to the NBC Studios at the world-famous Rockefeller Plaza in the city's latest fad-limo, an Escalade, courtesy of the program. Outside the studio, Sue was immediately besieged by some college fans from Georgia. Much picture-taking ensued, and then it was off to make-up and the taping.

Sue & Conan The show's producers provided some sex toys for the set (Sue doesn't exactly carry them through Customs with her!) and they sorted out the most "TV-friendly" items before the program began. Comedian/actor Ray Romano was another guest, and he joined Conan and Sue for the segment. Sue talked about sexual myths and pulled out a "Royal Buttler" as an example of a vibrating sex toy. Conan gasped in horror as it vibrated across his desk and leapt to the floor. The audience loved it and it was a very funny segment.

Backstage after the show, both Conan and Ray were very friendly, and kindly posed for pictures with Sue. As you can see in the picture to the left, Conan O'Brien is indeed tall! His six-foot-four frame dwarfed his diminuitive guest. As Sue has pointed out in the past, the older she gets, the shorter she gets. She was feeling particularly shrimpish on this occasion!

Then, the Talk Sex gang headed off to a new restaurant called Sasha for a splendid evening with the folks from Oxygen TV. This beautiful, period restaurant is located in the trendy "Meat-Packing District" of New York, formally a derelict section of the city near the Hudson River. Now, it is the place to be, and home of Oxygen Media.

Wherever she went, Sue was recognized and thanked by fans for offering the information she does every week. This means alot to her, especially when she is in another country, such as the U.S. or Brazil.

Sue & Ray Romano The next day was filled with meetings, but not so filled that Sue and Julie did not have some time for shopping! They cruised the area around the W Hotel in Union Square, and both bought shoes. Spring shoes, of course. It's that immaculate time of year when things are new, and possibilities are endless - including footwear, apparently.

Then, it was off to LaGuardia and back to Toronto. There were new toys to test and scripts to be written for another installment of "Talk Sex".

February 2006

Sue Does Hollywood!

Sue and Tyra on set The start of February found our intrepid host far from the wintery clime of her home. There she was, staying at a five-star hotel in sunny Hollywood, a guest of "The Tonight Show" and "The Tyra Banks Show". Not bad for a backwoods' girl from Kenora!

Sue and executive producer, Julie Smith, enjoyed three days of sun and some serious star treatment as they were whisked around in a coutesy limo (a Rolls-Royce, no less!) - they even had time to tape two shows.

Tyra Banks welcomed Sue back for a one-hour special. The program had created a class-room set for Sue to do what she does best - sexual education, with audience questions chosen at random. Discussion topics were based on a new national survey undertaken by Oxygen TV and Marie Claire magazine that will be released later this month. Sue had a ball, and she and Tyra got along famously. (Pictured right: Tyra Banks and Sue on the 'class-room' set specially constructed for the taping.)

The next day, it was off to "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno". This was a huge thrill for both Sue and Julie. Jay came to say Hi in Sue's dressing-room before the taping, and his warmth and good humour calmed her pre-show jitters. Yes, even Sue gets nervous. On air, she graciously contended with the antics of fellow guest, Roseanne Barr, and managed to show Jay a couple of toys from her "Royal Collection". After the taping, college kids in the audience started yelling, "We love you Sue!", and that really made her day.

Of course, there was time for shopping (there is ALWAYS time for shopping with these two!), and the Rolls delivered them to the world-famous Rodeo Drive. Well, taking the world's cheapest woman to the world's most expensive street does not make a lot of sense. Sue sews many of her own clothes or finds them in yard sales. If she needs something really nice, she will break down and buy a dress from Winners, a discount clothing chain. So, when the ladies ran across a T-shirt on Rodeo Drive that had a price tag of $2400 on it (!), they ran screaming from the store. Needless to say, they purchased nothing on that swanky street.

January 2006

Party Time!

Christmas chow! Sue and the crew held our 11th (!) annual Christmas dinner before the show on December 18, and once again, the food and the fun were spectacular!

This pot-luck event - held in the boardroom of the studio (how elegant!) - always offers a smorgasbord of flavours from around the world. Everyone brings a dish native to their familial homeland, and we end up with tasty treats from around the world. Sue made Swedish crepes stuffed with ground pork; Ali brought an Iranian rice dish with saffron; Sana provided Lebanese sweets. There were recipes from England, Italy, Columbia, India, and America - a virtual U.N. cafeteria! (Pictured right, clockwise: Liisa, Frances, Ali, Sue, Julie, Priya, Jay, John)

Before the dinner, Arthur decided the ersatz setting required some celebatory decor, and he created a Christmas tree, made of green painter's tape, on the presentation stand. Everyone who checked in had to add their own hand-drawn decoration to the tree. Audioman Dwayne (pictured left) went crazy and added several 'ornaments' to the tree.

Dwayne trims the tree After our amiable meal, the knives came out as we started to play 'Secret Santa'. Like many office parties, each person brings a gift - which could be either very good or really stupid - and we draw numbers. You then pick whatever present you want, open it, and, if you don't like it, take someone else's gift. Well, this turned into the usual riot, with people hiding their gifts, or desperately trying to get another crewmember to trade for it. A set of vanilla candles was a hot property that changed hands several times, as did a very ugly desktop fountain that resembed a baked potato with a waterfall dribbling out of its nose. How lovely!

Of course, after all this fun, we then have to go do a live show. But, we get down to business, clean up the boardroom, stash the gifts, and do what we've been doing for the last 11 years - creating an informational broadcast that makes people's lives better. We love our job, and the cameraderie is a bonus!

However, we weren't the only ones having a party....

Okay, this was actually a Halloween party, not a Christmas party, but we loved the concept and the photos! Talk Sex party

College students Chris, Matt, and Calypso staged a 'Talk Sex' party that certainly had people talking. With Sue's DVD playing on the TV in the background, Chris went in drag as Sue - complete with a grey, curly wig - and his two compatriots dressed as Sue's dollies. Apparently, they moved as erratically as those wooden dolls do! Talk Sex party

We thought this was a hilarious idea, and kudos to the gang for a cleverly-themed evening. We just want to know who got to test the sex toys!

December 2005

Festive Season = Guests!

Cory and Sue during rehearsal We rarely have guests on TALK SEX, but this December, we are being pleasantly overwhelmed with company!

First up was Cory Silverberg, Cory is the co-owner of a popular sex store in Toronto, Come As You Are, as well as the co-author of "The Ultimate Guide to Sex and Disabilities". He also just happens to be our head researcher for sex toys, a subject he knows extremely well. Cory arrived with a bag full of goodies, his suggestions for holiday gifts, and they ran the gamut from inexpensive stocking-stuffers - a $6 set of Dirty Dice - to a top-of-the-line sex machine, the 'Monkey Rocker', which retails for $800. Dildo not included!

Cory proved so popular that we kept him on for another segment to answer viewer calls about sex toys. He even stayed after the show and answered a phone call from a viewer about sex and disability. A very handy guest!

Sue and Sadie on set Next up, on December 11, will be "America's Pleasure Coach", Sadie Allison. Since Sadie last visited us, she has added two new additions to her credentials - she is now a Doctor of Sexuality, and she is an expectant mother. She's been busy!

Sadie has authored three bestsellers about sex, and she also runs www.ticklekitty.com. Her timely appearance this month will focus on a subject we get many calls and emails about - sex during pregnancy.

She has lots of tips about positions, plus keeping the relationship thriving during this potentially difficult, but joyous, time. If it's anything like her last appearance on the show, it will be a fun and informative segment. So don't miss it!

July 2005

The weather on July 9 was absolutely perfect for this year's "Cross Country Croquet " party at Sue's cottage on Lake Simcoe. Warm, sunny, and breezy - ideal conditions for drinking great quantities of beer. And wine. And vodka coolers, and just about anything else the crew could lay their lips on. Double Dong Hoop

The annual bash was a riot! Once again, Dwayne created a devilish croquet course that included some fairly complex - and hiliarious - obstacles.

For example, just starting the course was a challenge. It involved projecting your ball onto the field with a cordless drill and flipper. (He must stay up nights thinking of these things!) Then there was the 'double-dong dildo' hoop - which involved shooting the ball up a ramp and knocking the dildo off (harder than it sounds on a windy day!) Crazy driver

The climax of the course was more like a polo match than croquet - one team member, sitting in a kid's wagon, was pushed down a ramp by his or her partner, and had to whack a vibrating rubber fishie off its support with the mallet. This resulted in several hair-raising crashes and scuffed knees. No ambulance was required. We don't remember which team won.

Of course, there was plenty of swimming and visiting before supper, which was the traditional menu of barbecued burgers, potato salad, coleslaw, and apple pies. Yum! And then this year, people brought their guitars, so there was much singing and laughing before the evening was over. Once again, everyone in attendance slept over - on floors, in trucks, whatever - so there were no worries about drinking and driving. Now, if we could only remember who won the croquet game.....

Sue at "The View"!

Sue with Joy Behar backstage On May 4, 2005, Sue was off to New York for her second appearance on the popular ABC talk show, "The View".

Sue's topic was supposed to be sex education for kids, but when previous guest Goldie Hawn started talking about men's instinctual need to 'spread their seed', co-host Barbara Walters asked Goldie to stay and continue the discussion with Sue. So, there she was, the little nurse from northern Ontario, sitting with Goldie Hawn, Star Jones, Barbara Walters, and Joy Behar on national TV, holding her own. That's our Susie!

After the segment, co-host Joy Behar graciously came backstage to thank Sue, and quickly posed for the shot to the left. Then it was back to the hotel for some R&R, followed by a spectacular dinner with the folks from Oxygen TV. It certainly was a glamorous trip!

Visitor Update: During the evening of Sunday, April 24th, we had our 10 millionth web site visitor! We were all suitably excited, and it happened just before we went to air that night. Pretty cool! So, we are organizing a big contest to celebrate the event. Watch for an announcement in June.
